ABOUT ED HORN

During my working career as a police officer I found myself with the opportunity to renew an old passion… horses. It had been since my teens that I spent any time around them. My interest was not only rekindled, but I found something special in the horses and my riding education.

I received my formal training in horse management and equitation at the San Jose police department's riding academy. The San Jose Mounted Unit is one of only three full time Mounted Units in California . I was fortunate enough to take part in two Presidential Inaugural parades in Washington , D.C. , once as a rider for San Jose , and another as the trainer for Santa Clara County Park Rangers. The highlight of my training came when I was accepted to train at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police College in Ottawa , Canada . It was there, working for hours each day with highly trained instructors that it came together for me. I knew the knowledge of riding well had to be part of what I did on a daily basis.

I continued my training with the San Jose Mounted Unit and eventually was selected to develop a new mounted unit as the trainer for the Santa Clara County Parks Ranger Unit.

During those years, I began working with individuals outside of the Mounted Units at our small California ranch and at the Calero Stables giving riding instruction and doing horse training. In addition, I held clinics for equitation and horse education.

I have been starting young horses, as well as working with mature horses, on everything from good ground manners to jumping. Horses have to be handled with respect and kindness to teach them to trust. Clear communication in your horse's training is the key to developing a successful trusting relationship.

At Cedar Flat Ranch our goal is to provide a safe, fun and friendly environment to teach how to get the most out of the riding experience while respecting and caring for the education of the horse. Whether it's Western or English, trail or jumping, strong basic equitation is key to balance and performance.

Happy Riding! Ed
